The times they are a-changin’…

(A mom’s lament over the weekend’s time change– with apologies to Bob Dylan!)

The time’s come ’round, people
To turn back an hour
You realize what is comin’
And hopelessly cower
You know well that soon
Your kid’s mood will turn sour.
But Big Brother said time
Was worth savin’
So you ‘d better start turnin’
Or you won’t be on time
For the times they are a-changin’.

You mothers and fathers
The time change are dreadin’
You know that it means
Much less time in sleep heav’n
Although it’s just six
The kid still thinks it’s sev’n
And there’s no hopin’ for
An early bedtime
For the up-early now
Still goes to bed at nine
As the times in their heads start a-changin’.

Come Mummy, come Daddy,
Please hear my call
I stand in the doorway
It’s dark in the hall
I don’t want to sleep
I’m not sleepy at all
There’s a bad mood inside
And it is ragin’.
I’m cranky and tired
Hear my caterwaul
For the times they were a-changin’.

Come small sons and daughters
Throughout the land
I know this is hard
And you don’t understand
This whole “gain an hour” thing
Ain’t workin’ as planned
The old times didn’t
Need rearrangin’
But you’ve got to start new time
Back and forth I can’t stand
I hate it when times go a-changin’!

The clocks have been turned
The baton has been passed
The kid’s on real time now
It happened quite fast
As those messed bedtimes
Seem now in the past
Your joy though is
Rapidly fadin’.
You just realized now
It ain’t gonna last
‘Cuz the times once again will be changin’!

Seriously– of all the world’s most parent-unfriendly inventions, the time change must be pretty high on the list!
